Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1842.  Ben began his travels as a Post courier at the age of 13.  His travels continued during the Civil War and after managing pack trains for Indian Traders.  He signed on as an Army scout in 1868 and was a scout for Custer at the Battle of the Washita.  He was at Fort Reno from 1874 until his death in 1914. Respected by all, he was put in charge of the Post during the transition from Cavalry Post to Quartermaster Remount Station (1908).  Ben outlived each of his three Cheyenne wives.
