Died: September 29, 1890 Burial No. 87
Katherine Holmes is one of the two African American women buried at Fort Reno. Katherine was born a slave and later moved with her family to Kansas after being freed. Katherine, a civilian at Fort Reno, worked for an Officer’s wife doing household chores. Rules against marriage for soldiers in 25th Infantry often resulted in “jumping the broomstick,” a ceremony that bonded a man and woman as husband and wife.
