Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1842.  Ben began his travels with a wagon train when he was 16 years old.  His travels continued as a pony express rider with Bill Cody and as a scout during the Civil War.  When he returned to the West, he was hired as a Scout by General Sheridan.  He was a scout for Custer at the Battle of the Washita.  He was at Fort Reno from 1874 until his death.  Ben outlived each of his three Cheyenne wives.
